CVV OKANAGAN: Local – our new favorite thing – by Leanne Allen

First of all, let me apologize. There’s just too much to cover in one feature for this place.

Located in Summerland on Okanagan Lake lies the Local, one of the best restaurants I have ever been to. Why? Because absolutely everything that makes up a restaurant – location, food, service, atmosphere, hosts – is top shelf.

Driving down into Summerland Waterfront Resort & Spa, one of my favorite things about the Okanagan happens…I start thinking I’m in Tuscany… the architecture, the surrounding developments, the climate, the topography… if the roads were a little narrower and there were more Vespas I’d be right in the movie Under the Tuscan Sun.

The concrete floors, soft colors, floor to ceiling windows leading to the patio… it all leads to the view of Okanagan Lake.

And the night we hit it, there just happened to be the Havana Club outside with an uber-sexy salsa dancer and free mojitos. Welcome!

The owners, Cameron & Christa-Lee Bond, have done amazing things with the space as well. They’ve created four distinct areas, or rooms if you will: The Grille, which is where we sat, the patio, right on the lake, a lounge upstairs, with flat screens that – wait for it – have local photography on rotation – and a top level that has a very intimate feel, also with a deck outside on the lake.

The service was impeccable, with friendly staff, a visit from Christa-Lee, and the new executive chef, Lee Humphries.

Speaking of the new chef, he is quite the catch… originally from Cornwall, England, and most recently becoming notorious in Vancouver, he was graced such restaurants as the Westbury Mayfair Hotel on Bond Street, and in Vancouver…West, FigMint, Opus Hotel’s Elixir, and the Heather Hospitality Group, and he was most recently the executive chef of Vancouver’s foremost seafood restaurant – C. He is in love with the fact that in the Okanagan the idea of keeping it local offers so much – from the family-owned winery, McWatters, to orchards and microbreweries and farmland all around.

The food? Absolutely to die for.

5. bc albacore tuna tartare, red pepper emulsion,soft poached free range egg, house made spiced potato chips

6. pan seared thiessen farms duck breast, ravens view farms pickled plums, sautéed kale,slow cooked duck fat potatoes, plum fluid gel, roasting jus

And get this – it is completely kid-friendly. Our gang of four kids and three adults formed a great Italian-feeling family table, with smiles all around. Kids’ pizza on soft Greek style pitas was a huge hit, as were the homemade potato chips that got stolen off our tartare plate.

Just like Venice, Local is somewhere you all must visit. Again and again.
