As the crowd of hungry foodies descended upon Fernwood Square, the sound of smooth jazz and the enticing smell of cooking food wound through the square and up the street. The third annual Fernwood Bites boasted a staggering number of food and beverage vendors – by my count, at least 33. In a span of two and a half hours, the task was to eat and drink through offerings from many of Victoria’s finest restaurants.

As with all events where the food is created by incredible chefs, it’s hard to choose what was best. But there were a few standouts of the night for me. Cook Culture, immediately in the gate with a hot coconut thai soup and fresh bread, which was refreshing and simply irresistible. Jena Stewart and Rebecca Wellman from Devour pulled out all the stops, offering three separate dishes…seasoned ground pork with vermicelli and mango salad on endive, a pink peppercorn thyme soda (incredible!), and a gluten-free brownie. Next up, Oak Bay Bistro’s homemade sausage and beans baked with molasses and beer with OBBB mustard on a lettuce leaf.  It was a mini-meal in itself. Hilary Abbott  (of Hilary’s artisan cheese) had homemade paninis, and the Cornerstone Café surprised me with a absolutely beautifully presented curry on rice and naan bread.

Of the beverage presenters, Hoyne Brewery and Moon Under Water were definite beer standouts, while Fernwood Coffee offered a chilled coffee I really enjoyed.

If you didn’t make it to Fernwood Bites, there is no need to cry into a napkin. Mark next year in your calendar and in the meantime, you can try out each of these incredible restaurants over the next year.
